The 34th Annual NRL Workshop on Infectious Diseases was held at the Wrest Point Hotel in Hobart, Australia from 17-19 October 2017.
This year NRL dedicated two sessions to Lyme disease and was pleased to have three invited speakers present on this topic. Dr Tim Brooks from Public Health England discussed Lyme disease from a UK perspective whereas Dr Gary Lum from the Commonwealth Department of Health spoke on the Australian perspective. Dr George Kotsiou from North Shore Private Hospital also provided an overview of Tick-borne disease in relation to Lyme disease. In the ‘International Perspective’ session, invited speaker Associate Professor Benjamin Cowie (Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity) presented on addressing viral hepatitis in the Western Pacific and Professor Mark Boyd (Adelaide University) discussed HIV resistance testing. Dr Angela Caliendo from Brown University, also a guest speaker, spoke on the diagnosis and treatment of CNS infections dues to HSV and VZV in the ‘Challenges in Laboratory Diagnosis’ session.
Throughout the Workshop other sessions focused on Blood Screening, Public Health and the Review and Evaluation of Current Infectious Diseases testing.
NRL would like to thank all the sponsors, speakers and delegates who attended the Workshop and we look forward to seeing everyone in Melbourne for the 35th Annual Workshop on Infectious Diseases from 16-18 October 2018.
